Natural To Reverse

Viennese Waltz Natural to Reverse

This is a Bronze figure, used when switching from Natural Turn to Reverse Turn. Man dances RF Forward Change Step and Lady dances LF Backward Change Step. This online reference gives a detailed description of the dance steps, including timing, footwork, alignment, and movement; steps diagram; a list of figures that may precede or follow the pattern; and videos providing instruction and demonstration of the figure, techniques and practice routines that include it.

Man/Lady (RF Forward Change Step)

Start with Man facing DC, turning 1/8 to step RF forward along LOD.

  • 1: RF fwd | FLOD | HT | 1/8 to R btwn preceding step and 1 | Sway(S) | CBM | rise e/o 1

    • Previous step ends with some Sway. Between previous 3 and this 1, there is sway change.

    • Use small range of motion, connect R shoulder down to hip and foot. Don't use too much range of motion, which will make lady slide pass and end to the side. Need to keep lady in front of Man, right front to right front.

  • 2: LF diagonally fwd | FDW | T | 1/8 to R btwn 1 and 2 | Sway(R) | up on 2

    • L side leading. L leg swing fwd. hip travel faster than upper body.

    • When Lady does L side fwd. can change head to R and shape.

  • 3: RF closes to LF | FDW | TH | Sway(R) | up on 3, lower e/o 3

Lady/Man (LF Backward Change Step)

  • 1: LF back | BLOD | TH | 1/8 to R btwn preceding step and 1 | Sway(S) | CBM | rise e/o1, NFR

    • Do not take body back first. First, use the standing leg (RF), flex R knee joint and hip joint, push off RF.

    • Use small range of motion to step LF back. Then, head connect to LF.

  • 2: RF diagonally back | BDW | T | 1/8 to R btwn 1 and 2 | Sway(L) | up on 2

    • Swing hip and R leg back. It is R shoulder lead, but do not allow shoulder to rotate. Swing rib cage back. allow hips to open. Pull stomach muscle back. Give and keep R side to Man.

    • Lower center travels faster than upper center in backward action.

    • Head counter balance the swing. Do not take head to RF. Keep head over LF whole time.

  • 3: LF closes to RF | BDW | TH | Sway(L) | up on 3, lower e/o3

    • Use RF invite and draw LF in. Stay grounded. Do not lift LF and place it next to RF.

    • Keep head left.

Note:

  • After the first half of a natural turn, to change to reverse turns, the man can perform the LF Backward Change Step (the Lady's part above), while the lady does the RF forward change.

  • Change step in V. Waltz is allowed to turn about 1/4 total to get the alignment needed for the next Reverse Turn.

  • Change step make the travel direction change from one track to the other track. (Continuous Natural or Reverse Turn travels on one track.)
