Back Rocks
Samba Back Rocks
The Samba Back Rocks is Silver Level figure. This online reference gives a detailed description of the dance steps, including timing, and movement, technique; a list of figures that may precede or follow the pattern; and videos providing instruction and demonstration of the figure, techniques and practice routines that include it.
This figure starts in Closed Position.
Use "Polka Bounce": Each step is taken with a strong pressure through ball of foot, lightly lowering heel on the second half of step. Pelvis swings naturally towards the stepping foot on step 1 and 2 and start to return to normal position on step 3 (repeat for steps 4 to 6).

Follower
S: LF fwd | 1/8 to L | BF
Needs full weight on front of the foot, not weight in middle of two feet. Center lifted.
Really come toward close to partner, almost chest to chest.
Q: Replace weight to RF, having moved it slightly rightwards | 1/8 to L between 1 and 2 | BF
When rocking back, keep upper body more forward, think about only sending hip back to flip the skirt. Rebound elastic look.
Bring chest center in, almost a small body ripple, then hip back, so the body is not one block, looking stiff.
Heel only slightly touch the floor.
Q: Replace weight to LF | No Turn | BF
At end of beat, swivel on LF while RF is trailing through next to LF, brushes and then steps fwd.
S: RF fwd | 1/8 to R between 4 and 5 | BF
Rotate shoulder first, at the end, turn head sharply to R. Head is delayed to give it more emphasis on sharpness. Soft hips, sharp head.
Don't over swivel the back foot, back foot should still be in a turned out position.
Q: Replace weight to LF, having moved it slightly leftwards | 1/8 to R between 5 and 6 | BF
Q: Replace weight to RF | No Turn | BF
If continuing, do the swivel on RF, LF trails and draw curve on ground before stepping fwd. Delayed head turn to L on next S.
