Change of Direction

Foxtrot Change of Direction

This is a Bronze figure. This online reference gives a detailed description of the dance steps, including timing, footwork, alignment, and movement; steps diagram; a list of figures that may precede or follow the pattern; and videos providing instruction and demonstration of the figure, techniques and practice routines that include it.

Leader

  1. S: LF fwd | Facing DW | H | start to turn L | Sway(S) | CBM | --

    • At the preceding step (e.g. feather finish), frame should already be turning.

    • This step has CBM, with LF turned out a bit.

  2. S: RF diag fwd R side leading, and close LF to RF slightly fwd without weight | DW R Toe pointing towards LOD, End facing DC | IE of TH, then IE of T of LF | 1/4 between 1-2 | Sway(L) | --

    • At a corner, 3/8 or 1/2 turn may be made.

    • Pay attention to move along the same line/direction, do not change moving direction by doing step side - it's a fwd step. (though some coaches say this is a side step, don't do forward step.)

    • Big step, push off LF.

  3. S: LF fwd in CBMP | Facing DC | H | Sway(S) | CBM | --

    • This is exactly like a preparation step, shaping to right

Follower

  1. S: RF back | Backing DW | TH | Start to turn L | Sway(S) | CBM | --

    • Head really turns to L, follow the L elbow. Collect LF and push off RF to side.

    • One instructor says: she sometimes does a heel turn on this step.

  2. S: LF diag, back, L side leading, and close RF to LF slightly back without weight | Backing DW, End backing DC | IE of TH, then IE of T of RF | 1/4 between 1-2 | Sway(R) | --.

    • Upper body stay with partner. do not get into his space.

    • Pull weight onto LF, with balance. Do not anticipate movement. Allow L hip to finish, then keep turning L.

  3. S: RF back in CBMP | Backing DC | T | -- | Sway(S) | CBM | --

    • Option: This is like preparation step, shaping to left.

    • Depending on next, this could shape to R, head turn to R.
