The US News and World Report talks about a study linking dancing to fitness. A two hour weekly ballroom class added an average of 2000 steps daily to the regimens of otherwise sedentary people, out of the 10000 daily steps recommended for health. The article also reported on a similar study, with salsa dancing being the activity used in the study. I agree with the conclusions of the article that for the beginner, salsa and swing would provide greater fitness benefits than ballroom dances such as waltz and foxtrot. However, we found that as our technique improved, standard or smooth dances were at least as strenuous as salsa, if not more so. The three most strenuous for us have been Viennese waltz, quickstep, and samba.
